A wrong-way crash on Interstate 35W in Minneapolis early Saturday left one driver dead and another injured, State Patrol says.

The collision occurred at 5:51 a.m. near Johnson Street in Minneapolis.

Authorities say a Chevy Malibu was traveling southbound in the left lane of the northbound side of Interstate 35W when it collided head-on with a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Malibu moved into the center lane at the same time the Jeep attempted to shift from the left lane to the center lane, resulting in the crash. Both vehicles came to a stop in the right lane.

The driver of the Chevy Malibu, 21-year-old Aman Mukhtar Mohamed, of Crystal, died at the scene. State Patrol confirmed that Mohamed was in the wrong direction at the time of the collision. Authorities said alcohol was detected in Mohamed’s system and the roadway was dry at the time.

The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 25-year-old man from Lino Lakes, had non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. The State Patrol also confirmed the Cherokee driver was wearing a seat belt and alcohol was not detected.
