BCA: Shotgun Found at Scene of Olivia Officer-Involved Shooting; Man Killed is Identified

The man who was shot and killed by an Olivia, Minn., police officer after an altercation in an alley early Sunday morning has been identified by the Minnesota BCA and a shotgun was recovered at the scene, the agency said.

Around 2:20 a.m. Sunday, July 4, Ricardo Torres Jr., 32, of Olivia was initially involved in what police said was an “altercation” with an officer in the alley behind 821 East Lincoln Ave.

According to initial dispatch audio, the officer shot Torres after he brandished a sawed-off shotgun, but authorities have not officially said what led to the shots being fired. The officer was not injured and Torres was later pronounced dead at the hospital from multiple gunshot wounds.

The BCA said in a media release Tuesday that crime scene personnel recovered a shotgun from near where Torres was shot.

The name of the Olivia Police Department officer who discharged his firearm was also released by the BCA. Officer Aaron Clouse remains on standard administrative leave after the shooting and has been in law enforcement for 11 years, the BCA noted.

The department does not use body cameras and there is no dash camera or other known video of the incident, authorities said, but anyone with information is asked to contact the BCA at 651-793-7000.

Investigation is ongoing and the BCA said it will provide the findings of the investigation to the Renville County Attorney’s Office for review.
