Burnsville Man Sentenced to Prison for Role in Eagan Teen's Fentanyl Overdose

Sadiq Aden Isack

A Burnsville man has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in the fatal fentanyl overdose of a 16-year-old Eagan resident, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced today.

Sadiq Aden Isack, 29, was sentenced to 60 months in prison by Dakota County Judge Dannia Edwards for providing fentanyl-laced pills that led to the death of Hunter Verner Carlson in January 2021. Isack pled guilty to one count of third-degree murder (sell, give or distribute schedule I or II controlled substance) on May 23, 2024.

According to court records, Eagan police responded to a call at a residence on the morning of January 28, 2021, after Carlson's mother found him unresponsive, facedown in his bed. Despite resuscitation efforts by the responding officers, Carlson was pronounced dead at the scene.

A search of the teen's bedroom revealed a broken blue pill in a safe, which was later confirmed by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to contain fentanyl. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be positional asphyxia complicating acute fentanyl toxicity.

The investigation revealed that Carlson had ingested Percocet with a friend the night before his death. The friend arranged the purchase of the pills from two men from Burnsville. Home security footage showed a white car near Carlson’s home on the evening of January 27, 2021. The vehicle was identified as belonging to co-defendant Jamal Ahmed Adan.

Several weeks later, police found the same white car parked at a motel in Burnsville. Officers discovered both Adan and Isack in a motel room, along with over 30 light blue pills similar to the pill fragment found in Carlson's room. A forensic search of their cell phones revealed text messages between Adan, Isack, and the friend on the night before Carlson’s death.

“We need to continue to hold drug dealers accountable for the harm they cause to our communities in Dakota County,” said County Attorney Kathy Keena. “My deepest sympathies to Hunter’s family and all families who’ve lost a loved one to fentanyl poisoning.”

County Attorney Keena expressed gratitude to the Eagan Police Department and the Burnsville Police Department for their thorough investigation and partnership in the case.

Co-defendant Adan was sentenced in May 2023 and is currently serving a 60-month sentence. Isack remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail, awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
