CHARGES: Man Rams Vehicle, Shoots at Home After Being Served Protection Order
Less than an hour after being served with an order for protection, Thomas Goodwin allegedly showed up wearing a bulletproof vest at a Chisago County home, rammed into a vehicle in the driveway and fired rounds from a rifle earlier this week.
Authorities confirmed that Goodwin, 36, was served with the order at around 6:20 p.m. Monday, March 28 at his North Branch home.
At about 6:56 p.m., the Chisago County Emergency Communications Center received a call from the petitioner of the OFP, saying that Goodwin had contacted her, saying he was going to come see her at an address in Lent Township.
The woman was not at that address at the time but was concerned for the safety of the homeowners there and several children reportedly inside.
Just after 7 p.m., a new 911 call came in from the homeowner in Lent Township, who said that Goodwin had just arrived.
Goodwin allegedly used his vehicle to ram into another vehicle in the driveway, leaving it likely totaled, the sheriff’s office said.
He was armed with an AR-style rifle equipped with a suppressor and wearing a ballistic vest, witnesses told officers.
Goodwin got out of his vehicle, fired shots at the damaged vehicle in the driveway and continued to fire rounds “at random” as he approached closer to the house, the sheriff’s office said.
The homeowners and their children were inside at the time, though no one was injured in the incident.
When officers arrived, they saw Goodwin walking down the driveway. A SWAT team was activated and several surrounding agencies responded to assist. He was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
Goodwin was booked into the Chisago County Jail on multiple charges including threats of violence, violation of an OFP and criminal damage to property.
State records show no criminal history for Goodwin apart from two speeding tickets.
The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the North Branch Police Department, Wyoming Police Department, Lakes Area Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
