Driver Suspected of DUI After Fatal Crash Near Brainerd

A 34-year-old Brainerd woman died after being struck by a driver on Saturday afternoon.

Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk said the incident occurred at 3:56 p.m. Dec. 14 on Gull Lake Dam Road near Poplar Drive in rural Brainerd.

Deputies learned that a 2023 Ford Bronco, traveling westbound, had lost control on the icy roadway while attempting to slow for a parked pickup in the westbound lane. The driver of the pickup had been speaking with a pedestrian walking in the roadway when the crash occurred.

The pedestrian, identified as a 34-year-old Brainerd woman, was treated at the scene before being transported to a Brainerd hospital. She was later transferred to a St. Cloud hospital, where she died from her injuries the next day.

A blood sample was obtained from the Bronco driver, a 57-year-old Nisswa man, after he was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The results of the blood sample are pending and formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
