First Minneapolis Homicide Since February Leaves Man Dead
A man was shot and killed late Saturday night after crashing his vehicle into a garage outside a north Minneapolis apartment building.
MPD says 4th Precinct officers responded to reports of gunfire around 10:17 p.m. on April 19 along the 2000 block of West River Road North.
When officers arrived, they found a car that had crashed into the garage entrance of an apartment building. A man in his 20s was located inside the vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they found evidence of gunfire in the parking lot outside the building. Crime scene technicians with the Minneapolis Police Forensic Division processed the scene and collected evidence. Investigators are still working to determine the sequence of events that led to the crash and the shooting. Officers also canvassed the area, though no arrests have been announced.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner on Sunday identified the victim as 27-year-old Davione Daunte Charles Collins, of Maple Grove. He died of a gunshot wound to the neck and his death was classified as a homicide.

Chief Brian O’Hara noted that many people were inside the apartment building at the time and called the location of the killing “very concerning.” The shooting marked the first reported homicide in Minneapolis since February 15 and the first fatal shooting in the city since February 7.
