Man Charged After Being Shot by Carver County Deputies Last May

A Carver County man has now been charged following a string of events that ended with officers shooting and injuring him on May 4 in Chanhassen.

Derek Anthony Tyler West, 31, is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting his daughter over several years, beginning in Feb. 2020, when she was just seven years old.

On May 4, 2024, the victim disclosed the abuse to her mother, who then called 911. While on the phone with dispatchers, the mother reported that West grabbed a knife and went upstairs inside the residence.

Deputies arrived at the family’s Chanhassen home and began speaking with the victim’s mother outside a neighbor’s house, where she had taken the children for safety. Shortly after, West exited the home and began walking toward the deputies. Deputies reported observing what appeared to be an object concealed under West's shirt, held in place by a belt, while his left hand remained hidden.

Despite multiple commands to show his hands, West ignored the deputies’ orders. According to the complaint, West advanced on one deputy, drawing the knife with his left hand and charging toward him, prompting another deputy to fire his weapon, striking West multiple times.

West was eventually subdued and handcuffed before deputies rendered medical aid. During this time, deputies discovered that West had fashioned makeshift body armor by strapping a baking sheet under his shirt, allegedly to deflect a Taser.

West sustained serious but non-fatal injuries and was transported to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.

Following his release from medical care, West was placed in a group home but allegedly absconded multiple times. Court reports indicate that during one absence, West told staff he intended to acquire a firearm for “protection” against law enforcement. Staff on one occasion discovered a knife hidden underneath his blanket and West also reported using drugs on multiple occasions while in the group home.

West now faces a total of six felony charges including five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor and first-degree assault for attempting to use deadly force against a peace officer. The most serious charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in jail.

West is scheduled to make his first court appearance on these charges on Friday, As of publication, he remains in custody at the Carver County Jail.
