A man died early Sunday morning when his vehicle left the roadway and struck an overhead sign post in Saint Paul.

The crash occurred around 1:42 a.m. on Jan. 19 when the driver, operating a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling westbound on I-94 approaching Mounds Boulevard and the vehicle veered off the road to the left while exiting.

The vehicle collided with an overhead sign post and was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The driver sustained fatal injuries, and no other vehicles or people were involved.

Authorities did not provide information about whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt and the deployment of the vehicle’s airbags is unknown. It is also unclear if alcohol played a role in the crash.

The road was reported to be dry at the time of the incident. The driver’s identity will be released by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner after positive identification and notification of family.
