Minneapolis Man Sentenced for Fatal 2023 Shooting
A Minneapolis man will be sent to prison for shooting a man in October of 2023 during an altercation outside a Minneapolis home.
Dhaha Hayi Hassan, 25, received a 162-month prison sentence on Friday after being convicted of second-degree unintentional murder and possession of a firearm with no serial number in the death of Randy Burris.
A criminal complaint alleged the shooting occurred on October 1, 2023, when Dhaha Hayi Hassan shot and killed Burris during an altercation outside a Minneapolis residence. Witness statements and surveillance footage indicated that Hassan confronted Burris over a personal dispute, during which he retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking Burris.
The firearm used in the offense was later identified as having no serial number, making it untraceable. Hassan fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after the shooting. Burris was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at the scene.
The incident was investigated by the Minneapolis Police Department, with assistance from forensic teams who recovered the unregistered firearm and matched it to the crime. Hassan was charged with second-degree unintentional murder and possession of a firearm with no serial number.
A jury trial took place and a guilty verdict was delivered on October 11. After sentencing, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty acknowledged the grief of Burris's family, stating, "No sentence returns a loved one and nothing fills the hole they leave behind. However, this sentence protects the community and delivers accountability to Mr. Hassan."
