Minneapolis Police Officer Shot While on Duty; 4 Suspects Arrested
Minneapolis Police say an officer was shot near 4300 Colfax Avenue North around 9:15 p.m. Friday evening as he drove an unmarked police vehicle during an investigation into a previous robbery.
In a press release, police say the 7-year department veteran was following a vehicle that had fled from officers the day before and matched the description of a vehicle involved in a robbery. The officer was following the vehicle when shots were fired from the suspect’s vehicle toward the officer. The officer was struck by automatic gunfire and suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Officers responding to the area located the suspect vehicle and attempted to initiate a stop. The suspects fled and a pursuit was initiated. The driver crashed into a parked vehicle near 21st Avenue North and Upton Avenue North where four occupants of the vehicle were apprehended shortly after.
Two adult males, one adult female, and one juvenile male were taken into custody and a gun was recovered.
“This incident underscores the incredible courage and bravery that all of our officer’s display as they don the MPD uniform in defense of our city. MPD officers put their lives on the line every day to protect each and every community member, not knowing what each day of that service may bring,” MPD Chief Brian O’Hara said.
“We are extremely thankful and relieved that this officer is still with us. Thanks to the work of his MPD and law enforcement family, we have protected one of our own and we’ve taken four more potentially dangerous criminals off the street,” O’Hara said.
Deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office responded to process the scene and collect evidence. Police say the injured officer was released from the hospital around 1:15 a.m. Saturday.
MPD says the three adults arrested are Freddy Davis, Jr., 19, Jamin Bowman, 19, and Nevaeh Page, 19. A fourth juvenile male was also arrested but was not identified.
Police say Davis and Bowman were both initially taken to Hennepin Healthcare for injuries sustained in the crash. All three have since been booked into the Hennepin County Jail where they are being held on probable cause 2nd-degree assault.
