Minneapolis Teen Killed in Apparent Accidental Shooting
A 13-year-old boy died early Tuesday after a 14-year-old allegedly shot him inside a north Minneapolis home.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed the incident, calling the death “incredibly troubling and tragic.”
Officers from the 4th Precinct responded to a report of a shooting around 1:30 a.m. on the 2400 block of Ferrant Place. Inside the residence, police found the 13-year-old boy suffering from a single gunshot wound. Despite officers’ efforts to save him, the boy died at the scene.
Preliminary information suggests the 14-year-old was handling a gun when it discharged, fatally injuring the younger teen. At the time of the shooting, two adult women and other juveniles were inside the home, though no one else was harmed.
Chief O’Hara said the Minneapolis Police Department is actively investigating the events leading up to the shooting. The 14-year-old was taken into custody on the scene and has been booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.
"The death of a child is always incredibly troubling and tragic," Chief O’Hara said. He urged families to prioritize secure gun storage to prevent similar tragedies. MPD is continuing its investigation into the incident and has not released further details on the relationship between the juveniles or the events preceding the shooting.
