Officer Shot in White Bear Lake; Suspect in Custody
A White Bear Lake police officer is recovering at the hospital after being shot while attempting to serve a warrant Tuesday night.
The White Bear Lake Police Department said at approximately 10 p.m. on Jan. 24, officers attempted to make an arrest on the 3100 block of Karth Road. Shots were fired during the incident and a White Bear officer was struck by gunfire.
The officer was transported to a hospital, was in surgery and reportedly in stable condition.
According to dispatch audio, the officer was shot in the abdomen and had another graze wound to the thigh.

Officers from throughout the metro responded after the suspect retreated into an apartment. Negotiators attempted to convince the suspect to give up, but the suspect continued to threaten officers.
SWAT teams eventually deployed chemical agents in the apartment using a robot, at which point the suspect gave up and was taken into custody just after 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
According to court records, the suspect arrested—Daniel Holmgren, 33—has two active warrants for felony threats of violence and one warrant for felony domestic assault.

Per court filings, Holmgren has several recent contacts with police and prior charges related to threats and domestic assaults over the last 5 years. Over the course of a pair of March 2021 incidents, he allegedly repeatedly threatened to shoot officers and assault their family members. Court filings suggest the suspect has previously had mental health commitments from which he was subsequently discharged.
The Ramsey County Jail bookings show Holmgren is being held on probable cause attempted murder in addition to his outstanding felony domestic assault and threats of violence warrants. According to court documents filed Wednesday, an evaluation of Holmgren’s competency has been ordered.
