1 Dead, 2 Hurt in Shooting at Minneapolis Homeless Encampment

Minneapolis police are investigating a shooting early Saturday morning that left one man dead and two others injured at a homeless encampment.

Officers from the Third Precinct responded around 4:42 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the encampment near East 21st Street and 15th Avenue South.

Upon arrival, officers found three men suffering from gunshot wounds. They rendered aid and secured the area before all three were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. Despite lifesaving efforts, Deven Leonard Caston, 31, died due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Homicide investigators are working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting, including the involvement of three suspects who fled the scene on foot.

MPD forensic teams processed the scene, gathering evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Once again, tragedy has occurred at a homeless encampment, and all three of the injured are known to police. Those injured today are part of the at-risk population in homeless encampments,” MPD Chief Brian O’Hara said. “They are suspects, witnesses, and victims of crimes. The level of crime, the drug use, and other things associated with encampments continue to create very unsafe conditions that we are working with our partners to try to address.”

There have been no arrests as of Saturday morning and the investigation remains active.
