A traffic collision on Highway 1 claimed the lives of a tribal police officer and a Red Lake Band member Wednesday.

Beltrami County authorities identified the victims as Red Lake Department of Public Safety Officer Jesse Branch and Alan Lussier Jr., a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.

Both men were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles at the time of the crash, which occurred east of the Red Lake community.

According to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Officer Branch was responding to a call when the crash occurred.

The Sheriff’s Office described Branch as a professional and dedicated officer, noting his service with the Sheriff’s "Posse" volunteer group and his recent role with North Country First Responders.

“Jesse was an exemplary officer who loved and served his community with pride," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Flags at tribal buildings have been lowered to half-staff and tribal authorities offered condolences to the families of both men.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this difficult time," the Red Lake Tribal Council said in a statement.

"Today, we mourn the loss of two Red Lake community members," the Red Lake Department of Public Safety shared in a statement. "Officer Branch and Mr. Lussier will be deeply missed by all who knew them. Our thoughts are with their families and the entire Red Lake community."

Community members shared tributes to Branch on social media, describing him as a kind-hearted, devoted officer.

“Officer Jesse Branch committed his life to public service. He was known for his love and dedication to Red Lake Nation, where he selflessly served his community,” Gov. Tim Walz said. “With deep gratitude, Minnesota recognizes Officer Branch. His family, friends, and community are in our prayers.”

The Red Lake Department of Public Safety says the crash remains under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol and the FBI.
