Hastings Man Hit, Killed while Moving Deer Off Road

A 69-year-old Hastings man died early Wednesday morning after being struck by a driver while moving a deer from the roadway.

Dakota County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 6:35 a.m. after the man reportedly hit a deer while driving west on County Road 46 near General Sieben Drive in Marshan Township.

Authorities say the man pulled onto the north shoulder and exited his vehicle in order to move the deer from the roadway. While he was outside his vehicle, an eastbound driver struck him.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle was uninjured and remained at the scene. Authorities say the driver is cooperating with investigators.

Deputies arrived within one minute of the 911 call and began lifesaving efforts, but the man did not survive. The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol. Hastings officers and firefighters also responded to the scene.

Authorities have not released the victim’s name and no further details have been provided as of publication.
