Rice County Crash Leaves 75-Year-Old with Life-Threatening Injuries

A 75-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle crash in Rice County Sunday afternoon.

It happened just before 2 p.m. on northbound Interstate 35 near mile marker 58.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the driver of a 2024 Subaru Outback left the roadway and struck a tree in Wells Township, north of Faribault.

The driver, 70-year-old Terry Jay Whiteley, of Richfield, was wearing a seat belt and had non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to North Memorial hospital for treatment.

His passenger, identified as Diane Mabel Whiteley, 75, also of Richfield, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, the Patrol said. She was also transported to North Memorial and was wearing a seat belt at the time. Troopers said that alcohol was not involved.

State Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
