A man was fatally shot Saturday night in a residential area of the Payne-Phalen neighborhood on Saint Paul’s east side, bringing the number of homicides in the city this year so far to 34, which matches the record set in 1992. The city also matched that number in 2020, with a total homicide count all year of 34.

About 11:30 p.m. Saturday, police officers were called to the 1000 block of York Avenue and found an adult male who’d been shot. He later died from his injuries at the scene, Saint Paul police said in a media release.

Patrol officers secured the scene and began looking for possible witnesses. Investigators with the department’s homicide and forensic services units responded. As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to call 651-266-5650. Investigators do not believe the shooting was random.

The Ramsey County medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to positively identify the victim and determine his exact cause of death.
