Prison Inmate Given Additional 10 Year Sentence After Assault on Guards
A prison inmate serving time for attempted first-degree murder will be serving at least six and a half more years in prison after stabbing a correctional officer with a handmade shank. Inmate Adrian Dominique Bell, 31, was already serving more than 13 years in the Stillwater prison for shooting a man seven times in an attempt to kill him back in 2012.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Washington County, Bell and a second inmate, Robert Castillo, had confronted a correctional officer about a loss of privileges sanction the guard took against a different inmate. The officer felt threatened by the confrontation and a watch commander decided to place both inmates on investigative restriction, according to the documents.
Two correctional officers had called both the inmates to a security bubble to notify them they were placed on investigative restriction. Both inmates became upset and demanded an explanation. Castillo began walking up a stairwell towards his cell, but stopped and turned around to argue with the officers. Castillo then lunged at the officer and punched him in the head, the documents say.
Two other officers went to assist and all four individuals fell to the ground. Bell then removed a shank that was hidden in his pocket, ran up to an officer, and stabbed him in his abdomen. The shank then fell to the ground and Bell punched the guard in the face several times. The guard that was attacked by Castillo was able to break free and attempted to wrap up the defendant from behind. The defendant was able to shake off the officer and threw him to the ground before punching him several times. Additional help arrived and they were able to detain both inmates.
Correctional officers recovered the shank after the attack. The weapon was described as about five and a half inches long, made from a piece of rigid, thin metal with a sharp tip. All three officers required medical treatment after the assault and at a hospital.
Bell, who had an anticipated release date of December 27, 2021, for the attempted murder charge was sentenced to 10 years in prison, consecutive to his current sentence for the assault. The judge ruled that 80 months must be served in prison before being eligible for parole. Bell is now serving his time at the maximum-security prison in Oak Park Heights and now has an anticipated release date of April 2nd, 2029.
It’s unknown if Castillo is facing any charges in relation to the incident. Castillo was released from prison in July after serving his ten-year sentence for assault. In that instance, Castillo hit a woman he was in a relationship with in the head and arms using a hammer.
