The first shooting occurred on the 500 block of Blair Ave around 10:15 p.m. Dec. 28. Officers reported the victim had a gunshot wound to the chest and arm.

Officers detained multiple people that were in a nearby residence, but it's unclear if or how they were related to the shooting.

SPPD said in a media release that officers were initially called for a report of a fight inside a house. While they were en route, dispatchers updated that someone at the scene had fired gunshots and a person was struck.

When officers got there, they found a “chaotic scene” and a man with a gunshot wound. Medics transported the man to Regions Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, no arrests have been made and the victim has not yet been identified.

A second shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. at an apartment building on the 300 block of 7th St. W. There, officers found a male in his upper 20s with a gunshot wound to the upper leg. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The shooting on Blair Ave. is the 37th homicide of 2021 in Saint Paul. The previous record of 34 was already passed earlier this month. In Minneapolis, homicides are nearing the record of 97 set in the mid 1990s.

UPDATE: Saint Paul police identified the victim of the Blair Ave. homicide as Jarrell R. Kirk. They arrested Brandis Junton Wells, 34, in connection to the murder on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022 after he turned himself in at police headquarters. Wells remains in custody at the Ramsey County Jail as of Tuesday.
