VIDEO: Stolen SUV Leads to High-Speed Chase, Crash in Ramsey County

A Honda SUV stolen last week from a Saint Paul pickleball court led to a high-speed pursuit across Ramsey County, ending in a crash on County Road I.

Saint Paul police were first notified around 11:19 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, of the vehicle theft from the parking lot at 890 Cromwell Ave.

The vehicle’s owner told officers that someone had stolen her jacket—containing the key to her 2021 Honda CR-V—while she played pickleball. When she returned to the lot, the vehicle was gone. The Honda, valued at more than $5,000, was entered into state and national crime databases as stolen.

At about 9 p.m. that evening, a Ramsey County deputy spotted the stolen vehicle making a U-turn to southbound Lexington Avenue near County Road F in Shoreview. Inside were a white male behind the wheel and a female passenger. The driver was later identified as Marshall David Planting, 20, of Pine River, and the passenger as Lachelle Monique Nordstrom, 33.

The deputy began trailing the vehicle as it headed onto westbound I-694. According to the criminal complaint, Planting began driving erratically, reaching speeds of approximately 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. He passed a vehicle on the shoulder near the junction of I-694 and Highway 10, prompting the deputy to activate emergency lights. Rather than stopping, Planting accelerated and fled westbound on Highway 10, court documents say.

The pursuit continued north on I-35W and then north again onto County Road I. There, Planting abruptly braked. A deputy attempted a PIT maneuver—also known as a TVI—to force the vehicle into a curb, but Planting evaded it and continued east on County Road I. Additional squad cars joined the pursuit, lights and sirens active, as Planting looped around local roads in the Shoreview-Arden Hills area.

At County Road I and Dunlap Street, another deputy executed a successful PIT maneuver. The stolen Honda slid off the road and rolled onto its side. Deputies pulled both Planting and Nordstrom from the disabled vehicle. They immediately noticed an attempt to alter the vehicle’s license plate: a white paint marker had been used to change the letter “L” to an “I.” The paint marker was later found inside the vehicle.

Nordstrom, speaking to investigators after the crash, claimed she knew Planting only by the nickname “Maverick” and described him as a friend of her child’s father. She said Planting had picked her up earlier in the Honda, and when deputies tried to stop them, she urged him to pull over. According to Nordstrom, Planting responded, “No no no, sorry grandma,” and continued fleeing.

During the pursuit, Nordstrom said Planting retrieved a dark-colored duffel bag, placed it in her lap, and rolled down her window. He then allegedly told her, “Hurry the f*** up,” and instructed her to throw the bag out the window. She complied, tossing the bag out of the vehicle on County Road I near I-35W, the documents said.

Deputies, aided by a K-9, found the discarded green duffel bag. Inside was a short-barreled AR-style firearm with its serial number scratched off, along with a box of white masks and a pair of black cotton gloves. Possession of the firearm was prohibited for Planting, with a prior felony conviction for threat of violence.

Planting declined to speak with investigators following his arrest. Prosecutors noted that he has at least one active warrant, an open case for 2nd-degree assault and a history of receiving stolen property as a juvenile.

Planting is now facing multiple new charges, including felony vehicle theft, fleeing police in a motor vehicle, illegal possession of a firearm and altering license plates. Nordstrom’s role remains under review.

Court records show that Planting turned 20 on April 14, 2025—just five days after the chase.
