Woman Fatally Shot in Brooklyn Center Home; Anoka Man Charged with Murder

BROOKLYN CENTER—A 36-year-old Anoka man has been charged after a woman was found fatally shot inside a home on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Isaac Klinger faces preliminary charges of 2nd-degree murder, 1st-degree drug possession and possession of a firearm in the shooting death of Katie Ann Fredrickson, 34.

According to court documents, police arrived at the home on the 5400 block of 68th Ave. N. around 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 and found Fredrickson face down on the couch with two gunshot wounds to the center of her chest.

Fredrickson also had a gunshot wound to her right thumb, consistent with having put her hand out in defense before the gunshots, documents said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators found a spent shell casing on the floor of the home, in front of the couch where Fredrickson was found and another casing nearby.

The victim’s phone and Klinger’s phone were found within reach of her body, investigators said.

A witness of the incident later told investigators that he was spending the evening at Fredrickson’s residence with his girlfriend, a woman who also witnessed the events. The man said he was in the bedroom when he overheard Klinger and Fredrickson arguing in another room.

The witness told police that Klinger was the “off-again-on-again boyfriend” of the victim Fredrickson.

During the loud arguing nearby, the witness then told police that he heard a gunshot. The witness said he and his girlfriend feared for their lives and escaped through the bedroom window. As they were running, the witness said he heard Fredrickson yelling “just stop, Mike” and two more gunshots.

Investigators spoke to the female witness who also fled the shooting. She reported hearing loud arguing between Klinger and Fredrickson, then a gunshot sound from the room.

As they were running through backyards to get away from the gunshot, she heard two additional gunshots come from the house.

A short time later, Klinger fled the scene in a vehicle. According to court documents, a neighbor was able to record the license plate of the vehicle, which was discovered to have been rented.

The location of the vehicle was provided by the rental company and officers found it in St. Louis Park, where surveillance was carried out.

Klinger was apprehended just hours later without reported incident as he arrived back to the rented vehicle. He was in possession of four handguns—three of which were listed as stolen—more than 445 grams of methamphetamine and $5,360 in cash, the court documents said.

A search warrant was carried out at a St. Louis Park hotel room after Klinger was found with the room kay card, and investigators found ammunition and additional magazines inside.

Klinger was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a previous felony conviction.

Klinger’s first court appearance on the charges is set for Wednesday.
