At the scene, they found a woman lying unconscious near the doorway, bleeding from her mouth and struggling to breathe. Emergency responders transported her to the hospital, where she underwent surgery due to a head injury that caused severe brain swelling. She remains on a ventilator and her condition is critical, the court documents said.
Inside the apartment, officers discovered Calvin Doise Little, 35, asleep on a bed with his clothes covered in dried blood. Police say Little smelled strongly of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes, then became confrontational after initially cooperating with officers. Witnesses told investigators that Little had been drinking throughout the day and attacked the victim following an argument.
The criminal complaint noted that the defendant's girlfriend reported that the situation escalated when the victim attempted to defend herself with a kitchen knife. Little allegedly disarmed her and then struck her multiple times in the head with his fists. When the girlfriend attempted to intervene, Little reportedly swung at her, prompting her to flee the apartment with her two children.
Another resident said she encountered Little in the hallway, where he angrily threatened her and tried to enter her apartment. The resident described Little as intoxicated and hostile.
Little was arrested at the scene and later told investigators he could not recall the events leading to his arrest, admitting he had been drinking and was upset with his girlfriend.
The complaint stated that the victim’s prognosis remains poor and additional charges may be filed if her condition worsens. Little is being held in custody with bail set at $300,000 and he is prohibited from contacting the victim or witnesses. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of first-degree assault.
