Brooklyn Park Man Sentenced for Murder at Family Party

A Brooklyn Park man has been sentenced to 306 months in prison for the murder of a relative during a family gathering in Sept. 2024.

Lue Chang, 32, pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree murder in November.

The shooting occurred on Sept. 21, 2024, during a birthday celebration at a residence on the 7500 block of Kentucky Avenue North. According to court records, Chang reportedly became upset over perceived disrespect from a relative.

Witnesses said the argument escalated and Chang retrieved a firearm from his vehicle before fatally shooting the victim—identified in court documents as a 45-year-old man—multiple times in front of family members, including children.

Brooklyn Park officers arrived shortly after the shooting and found the victim unresponsive. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Judge Tamara Garcia imposed the 25.5-year sentence, which includes a mandatory minimum incarceration of two-thirds of that sentence, or about 17 years, before eligibility for supervised release. Chang was also ordered to provide a DNA sample and is permanently barred from possessing firearms or ammunition. He received credit for 87 days of time served.
