Eagan Man Charged After Burglary, 9-Hour Standoff

EAGAN—A 33-year-old man has been charged after an alleged burglary Sunday morning led to a 9-hour long standoff at an Eagan home and the deployment of a SWAT team and armored vehicle.

Alexander Christopher Hummel, Jr., faces counts of 1st-degree burglary, obstructing legal process and violation of a harassment restraining order for the incident on Aug. 28.

Just after noon, officers were called after Hummel was seen at the residence near Emerald Ln. & Diamond Dr., in violation of a previous harassment restraining order.

Officers found Hummel’s vehicle in the driveway and determined that he entered the residence through a side door, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Several fresh shoe prints were found on the home’s side door and the lock on the door appeared to have been smashed in, with blankets hung over the windows of the residence.

Officers attempted to make contact with Hummel inside the house but were initially unable to.

The reporting party provided officers a key and permission to enter the residence, but officers found that Hummel had damaged the locks from inside the home, preventing them from using the key to gain access.

Officers set a perimeter around the residence and began to negotiate with Hummel to leave the home. At around 2:36 p.m., officers heard a single gunshot coming from inside the residence.

Officers spoke with Hummel and attempted to convince him to leave the residence, and he did at several times exit during the negotiations, but each time he immediately re-entered the residence.

At about 9:30 p.m., Hummel exited the residence and was taken into custody by officers on the front lawn.

After taking Hummel into custody, officers conducted a search of the residence and found that no one else was inside. They found a 9mm handgun belonging to the initial reporting party, which was located in a gun case in one of the rooms, according to a criminal complaint.

Wrapped around the handle of the gun case was a cable lock that officers determined was not secured to the case. Officers also saw that the key to the cable lock was already inserted into the lock mechanism.

Along with the handgun, officers found three empty magazines—one of which was in the handgun—and a magazine loaded with eight live rounds.

Hummel had his first appearance in court Tuesday and bail was set at $150,000 without conditions or $100,000 with conditions. His next court date is set for Sept. 22.

Hummel has no felony level criminal history in the state. He has convictions for misdemeanor charges of damage to property and disorderly conduct, in 2012 and 2011 respectively.
