A high-speed pursuit ended in a fatal crash in Saint Paul late Sunday night.

A Minnesota State Patrol trooper first attempted to stop the suspect vehicle near I-94 and Marion Street at 11:18 p.m., though the reason for the stop remains unclear.

According to dispatch audio reviewed by MN CRIME, the trooper reported the vehicle was reaching speeds of over 120 mph on I-35 before exiting onto Wheelock Parkway.

Ramsey County deputies took over the pursuit as the vehicle continued eastbound on Larpenteur Avenue at speeds exceeding 90 mph. Just moments after deputies reported they had discontinued the pursuit with the State Patrol helicopter overhead, the vehicle crashed at Arcade Street & Larpenteur Avenue East.

One person in a vehicle that was struck during the crash was reportedly ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the fleeing vehicle ran from the crash site but was quickly apprehended after deputies deployed a Taser device.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, and the area remains closed as authorities investigate. Further details about the victim and the reason for the initial stop have not yet been released. The suspect’s name is also not known at this time.

“The suspect driver, a 28-year-old male from Minneapolis, was apprehended by a Ramsey County Sheriff’s Deputy after fleeing on foot. A Taser was used to assist law enforcement in the apprehension of the fleeing driver. The parked vehicle was occupied and the occupant in the vehicle died as a result of the crash. The male suspect has been booked into the Ramsey County Jail.”
