Burnsville Police Fatally Shoot Armed Carjacking Suspect
Burnsville police on Sunday fatally shot an armed man who is believed to have previously carjacked a woman at gunpoint and fired several gunshots at officers during a pursuit.
Police say the white male suspect in his late 20s crashed the vehicle he was driving and attempted to carjack another person before he walked onto the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 13, just east of I-35W and exchanged more gunfire with officers just after 3 p.m.
UPDATE: Authorities ID Carjacking Suspect Killed by Burnsville Police
The suspect was shot twice in the chest, according to initial emergency dispatch audio, and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he died of his injuries later Sunday afternoon, Burnsville police confirmed. There were no officers injured in the incident and those who fired their weapons have been placed on standard administrative leave.
The fatal officer-involved shooting comes just seven days after 20-year-old Daunte Wright was killed by a Brooklyn Center officer who shot her service weapon instead of her Taser. A group gathered at the scene on both sides of Hwy. 13 in Burnsville as of early evening, some observing silently and others chanting slogans on a bullhorn as officers from multiple agencies locked down the highway. Agents with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension—the statewide agency that investigates officer-involved shootings—processed the scene into the night.
Burnsville officers are equipped with body cameras and that footage may be released at a later date. Police provided no further information and the investigation is continuing, with that portion of Hwy. 13 shut down Sunday night.
