Authorities say a 36-year-old man from Hudson, Wisc., was located at the scene and taken into custody. Investigators believe the victim and the man in custody knew each other and that the shooting doesn’t appear to be random.

Traffic on Thompson Avenue remained blocked late Friday night, with squads from Inver Grove Heights assisting with scene security.

Detectives from the South St. Paul Police Department, working in partnership with agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, are still gathering evidence and piecing together what led up to the shooting. The exact circumstances remain under investigation.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the victim’s cause of death and to confirm his identity.

As of now, formal charges have not yet been filed. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the South St. Paul Police Department at (651) 413-8300.
