Brooklyn Center police say around 4:20 p.m., officers were notified of an adult male murder suspect with an active arrest warrant who was believed to be in the city.

They located the suspect vehicle a short time later.

Sources tell us the suspect is Hakeem Waheed Muhammad, wanted in relation to the April killing of Devan Trevon Dampier, 29, of Minneapolis.

Officers requested help from the State Patrol helicopter and attempted to use a tire-deflating device, but it failed to immobilize the suspect vehicle, police said, and a pursuit was initiated.

A State Patrol helicopter was requested to assist in the pursuit, but the suspect eventually crashed into the unrelated vehicle on the border of Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis.

After the crash, officers rendered aid to the five occupants in the unrelated vehicle and to the murder suspect, who was the sole occupant in the fleeing vehicle.

Officers first on scene reported they had CPR underway on the child who was injured. A child’s pink shoe remained outside of the overturned vehicle struck by the suspect as reconstruction of the crash and investigation stretched into the evening.

The pursuit and crash are being investigated by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.
