A man is dead and another is seriously injured after a head-on crash in Burnsville around 2:45 a.m. Saturday. Emergency crews were called to southbound Interstate 35 at Crystal Lake Road for the crash that closed all traffic on the interstate for hours.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2013 Ford Fusion driven by Austin John Grosam, 20, of Mankato, was southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 when he crashed head-on into a 2014 Lexus ES driven by a 27-year-old man from Burnsville.

Grosam rolled the Fusion onto the right shoulder, landing the vehicle on its roof.

Grosam was able to get out of his vehicle and ran across the interstate, crossing into the southbound lanes of traffic, where he was then struck by multiple passing cars, including a semi-truck, according to a State Patrol incident report. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lexus was transported by ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis with life-threatening injuries. The State Patrol reported that injured person was wearing a seat belt and no other drivers suffered injuries.

The State Patrol incident report says Grosam was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It’s as yet unknown if alcohol played a factor in the crash. Grosam was transported to the medical examiner’s office and more information may be available in the coming days if an autopsy report is released.
