Overnight 2-Alarm Fire in Hibbing Destroys Family Business
The Hibbing Fire Department responded to a large fire at Yoder Building Supplies just after 9:00 p.m. Friday evening. Fire crews arrived and found fire showing from the warehouse-style building. Firefighters reported the fire quickly spread and breached the roof which prompted a second alarm being called.
Firefighters from the Hibbing, Fayal, Eveleth, Nashwauk, Grand Rapids, and Mountain Iron all fought the blaze for nine hours before the blaze was extinguished. Due to the size of the building and the roof collapsing, the City of Hibbing assisted at the fire by demolishing part of the structure.
According to firefighters, the building was not occupied at the time and no injuries were reported. The building is said to be a total loss and firefighters estimate $1.5 million in damage.
On Facebook, Yoder Building Supplies said, “We are heartbroken to have lost our building last night to such a devastating fire We can’t thank all the fire departments enough for the hard work and long hours they put in last night. They are definitely our local heroes.”
The fire remains under investigation by the Hibbing and Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s, but no foul play is suspected.
