17-year-old Killed in Maplewood Highway Collision
Police say a pedestrian died early Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 61 in Maplewood.
The incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. near the intersection of southbound Highway 61 and Highway 36.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2024 Kia Sportage, driven by a 30-year-old Maplewood man, hit the pedestrian, now identified as 17-year-old Heriberto Severino-Luna, of Maplewood.
The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was uninjured and showed no signs of alcohol involvement.
Emergency crews from Maplewood Police, Fire, and EMS responded to the scene, but Severino-Luna was pronounced dead.
This crash capped off a 7-hour stretch which involved three fatal crashes. Just over an hour earlier, a 39-year-old woman fleeing police suffered fatal injuries after crashing into a semi. Late Sunday evening, a 17-year-old died after crashing their vehicle into a light pole which became engulfed in flames.
