Second Inmate Sentenced For 2023 Assault On Prison Guard

via Minnesota Department of Corrections

A 27-year-old inmate got an additional 15-year prison sentence this week for his role in the assault of correctional employees last year.

The sentence for Jeremy Carpenter stems from the March 7, 2023, incident in which he and another inmate, Curtez Deshawn Graham, assaulted correctional staff in Complex 3 of the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Oak Park Heights.

According to court records, the incident began when Carpenter, agitated after being instructed to return to his designated unit, spat at a correctional sergeant before launching into a physical assault, kicking and punching the sergeant.

Graham joined in, striking the sergeant’s head, leading to serious injuries, including multiple fractures to the nose and symptoms consistent with a traumatic brain injury. When other officers arrived to intervene, Carpenter knocked one officer unconscious and, alongside Graham, attacked another, causing additional injuries.

The criminal complaint states that due to the severity of the injuries, the assaulted sergeant may be forced into retirement.

Carpenter and Graham both pled guilty, both accepting the mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, which will be served consecutively with their existing sentence. Carpenter is currently serving 30 years for a shooting in 2019 which caused the death of an adult male and injured the decedent’s 4-year-old son.
