St. Louis County Man Charged With Arson After House Fire Kills 3 Cats

A St. Louis County man faces one charge of 1st-degree arson after he allegedly set fire to a home, resulting in the deaths of three cats inside early Friday afternoon.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a house on the 8600 block of Donnywood Circle W. in Britt, Minn., about 30 miles northeast of Hibbing.

A neighbor had reported flames coming out of a window of the house and deputies found a man walking on a nearby roadway shortly after.

Deputies discovered the man walking was the owner of the residence that was on fire.

The sheriff’s office said the homeowner, Devin Wayne Hadersbeck, 51, had “made utterances” to deputies related to the house fire, which lead to his arrest.

Hadersbeck was booked into the St. Louis County Jail in Virginia on probable cause 1st-degree arson, a felony.

Several area fire departments responded to the scene early Friday afternoon and were able to contain the fire to the home, though it had severe fire, smoke and water damage.

The sheriff’s office said three cats that were inside the home died in the fire. There were no injuries.

Formal charges against Hadersbeck are pending.
