Saint Paul police say a homicide investigation is underway after a welfare check Friday night led to the discovery of a man dead from a gunshot wound in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood.

Officers were dispatched to a senior living apartment building on the 700 block of E. 7th St. just before 7 p.m., SPPD said.

Officers arrived and made entry into the apartment, where they found the man, believed to be in his late 50s. Investigators determined the shooting was not self-inflicted.

No arrests have been made and police do not believe the shooting was random. Call 651-266-5650 if you have any information.

The man's death is the 19th homicide in the city of Saint Paul so far this year.

UPDATE: The Ramsey County medical examiner has identified the man shot and killed as Leonardo Bedell, 59, of Saint Paul.

On June 5, police arrested a 49-year-old Saint Paul woman in Minneapolis, suspected in the killing of Bedell. She was later released with no charges formally filed, pending further investigation.
