Woman Charged in Drunken Crash With Child in Car

A Brooklyn Center woman is facing six charges after allegedly driving drunk with a revoked license and crashing while her 7-year-old daughter was a passenger in the car.

Brooklyn Center police were called to the intersection of 61st Ave. N. & Emerson Ave. N. just before 8 p.m. on April 10, 2023, on a report of a two-vehicle crash. A 911 caller reported seeing a green SUV speeding down Emerson Ave. N. and heard a crash shortly after.

Upon arrival, a police officer observed a vehicle had been struck on the passenger-side door and a green SUV crashed in the front lawn of a residence.

Kathleen Loyd, 34, approached the officer and said she was driving the green SUV. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath and Loyd admitted to drinking before the crash. Loyd agreed to take a preliminary breath test, which revealed an alcohol concentration of .212, and she was placed under arrest. The legal limit in Minnesota is .08.

Loyd’s 7-year-old daughter was a passenger in the backseat of the vehicle at the time of the crash and was not injured. The driver of the other vehicle complained of knee pain as a result of the crash.

Police say Loyd’s license was revoked at the time of the crash. She faces up to one year in jail on each of the three counts of criminal vehicular operation and two counts of DUI, while the charge of driving after revocation carries a maximum sentence of 90 days.
