Authorities say a 63-year-old man suffered life-threatening burns after a fire engulfed his home in rural Eveleth late Friday morning.

At around 11:26 a.m. on Oct. 11, first responders and multiple area fire departments were dispatched to the property on the 7100 block of Antoinette Road after a passerby reported seeing the man lying at the end of a driveway, severely burned.

Law enforcement arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames, with thick smoke visible from a distance. The man had suffered burns over most of his body. Emergency personnel quickly moved to provide first aid until the arrival of a Life Link air medical helicopter, which airlifted him to a metro area hospital for treatment.

Authorities identified the victim as 63-year-old Dale Wallander, of rural Eveleth. Wallander later died at the hospital due to the injuries he suffered in the fire.

There were no other injuries reported at the scene and no one else was at the property when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, which is being supported by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office received assistance from several agencies including the Eveleth Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Eveleth and Virginia Ambulance, and multiple area fire departments: Fayal, Central Lakes, Colvin, Ellsburg, Makkinen, Lakeland and Palo.
