Man Charged in Assault Outside Duluth Casino
A Duluth man is charged with attempted 1st-degree aggravated robbery, accused of assaulting a man leaving a casino and trying to steal his cash.
Chase Dayton Covington, 20, of Duluth, was seen on video surveillance assaulting a man with a baseball bat on April 9. According to the criminal complaint filed, a man had just left the Fond-du-Luth Casino and was walking down the sidewalk when Covington approached him and asked him for money.
When the victim told Covington he lost all his money at the casino and didn’t have any, Covington took out a small bat and swung it at the victim’s head, delivering a glancing blow. The victim fell to the ground and Covington began hitting the victim on the legs with the bat. Video shows the victim yelling for help.
Eventually the victim was able to get into a taxicab and was brought back to the casino, where police were called. Officers observed swelling on the victim’s legs where he was struck.
Police were able to review surveillance video and positively identify Covington as the suspect. He was located nearby and taken into custody. The video also led officers to recover the bat in a nearby stairwell.
According to court records, Covington was convicted of 2nd-degree aggravated robbery in a 2021 incident where he took a man’s backpack and threatened him with a machete when the victim tried to retrieve it. Covington was sentenced to 21 months in prison for that case.
Covington made a court appearance last week where bail was set at $100,000. He remains in custody at the Saint Louis County Jail and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
