Man Dies in House Fire Near Ely

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says an elderly man died after a house fire in Morse Township on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency personnel were called to the report of the structure fire just after 1:15 p.m. Sunday on the 1400 block of Grant McMahan Boulevard in Morse Township, near Ely. 911 callers reported that the elderly homeowner was believed to still be inside.

Firefighters arrived and searched the ablaze home but were unsuccessful in locating the man. After the fire was under control, firefighters were able to locate the deceased victim inside in the residence.

Authorities say the fire was accidental and started near the fireplace of the home.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy and has not released the name nor age of the victim.
