Man Jumps to Safety From Burning Home Near Cook

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says two people were able to escape a house fire early Thursday morning, with one of the residents jumping from a 2nd-story window.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the 9900 block of Highway 22 in Alango Township, which is south of Cook. Dispatch received a 911 call from a resident saying there was smoke coming from the upstairs bedroom, where her nephew had been staying.

The resident told dispatchers she couldn’t get upstairs to see if her nephew had escaped the blaze, due to heavy smoke conditions inside.

Law enforcement arrived and found that the man had jumped from the 2nd-story window to escape the fire and smoke. He was transported by ambulance to Cook Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. The female resident was uninjured.

Firefighters say the damage to the home is substantial. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
