2 Dead After Airplane Crashes in Woods Near Duluth

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says two people are dead after a plane crashed into a wooded area in St. Louis County on Wednesday morning.

Crews were called to the 8300 block of Pequaywan Lake Road, about 25 miles north of Duluth in an unorganized township after the US Air Force received an aircraft beacon alarm.

A spotter plane in the area observed possible wreckage on the ground and guided deputies to the location. Upon arrival, deputies found both the pilot and the passenger deceased.

Authorities say the plane was a 1946 Aeronca Cjamp, which seats two occupants. The cause of the crash is unknown, but it is believed the aircraft recently had an annual inspection completed and was on a “return to service” flight.

Authorities say the pilot, Bryan Paul Handyside, 60, and passenger, Matthew William Joseph, 64, died in the crash. The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash.
