Firefighters rescued two young children from a burning townhome in Vadnais Heights on Saturday evening, officials said.

The fire was reported around 5:40 p.m. at a townhome complex on the 1000 block of County Rd D East.

When crews from the Vadnais Heights Fire Department arrived, heavy smoke and flames were visible from one of the units, according to authorities. Immediately upon arriving at the scene, crews learned that two children were trapped inside the burning building.

With assistance from Maplewood, Little Canada, and White Bear Lake fire departments, firefighters entered the home and rescued two children. Another adult and child were able to escape before crews arrived, officials said. All four were transported to Regions Hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.

The fire was extinguished, and firefighters assisted other residents in the area. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Vadnais Heights Fire Department, the Ramsey County Fire Investigation Team, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
