15-year-old Girl Killed in Columbia Heights Shooting
A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed in a shooting late Thursday night in Columbia Heights, authorities have confirmed. Around 11:57 p.m., police were called to the 3900 block of 3rd St. NE. after a report of a victim being struck by gunfire.
Cottage Grove Man Pleads Guilty in Bank Robbery Spree
A Cottage Grove man pleaded guilty Tuesday in connection to a metro bank robbery spree spanning three different locations. Michael Thomas Prall, 43, is accused of using force, violence and intimidation to steal thousands of dollars from three separate banks in Nov. 2021.
Andover Man Gets 18 Years for 2020 Fatal Shooting in Coon Rapids
An Andover man was sentenced Monday to 18 years in prison for killing a 19-year-old outside a Coon Rapids grocery store in November 2020. Vaughn Jarod Coklas, 20, was convicted of 2nd-degree murder for killing Staveonte El Brown and received a sentence of 216 months in prison with credit for 477 days already served.
At Least 13 Rounds Fired Near Brooklyn Center Business in Mid-Day Gunfight
A surveillance camera caught a brazen mid-day gunfight outside a Brooklyn Center strip mall Friday afternoon. There were no immediate injuries reported, but police say at least 13 rounds were fired. Just after 1:35 p.m., police responded to the 1300 block of Shingle Creek Pkwy. after multiple callers reported hearing the gunfire.
CHARGES: Ex-Boyfriend Set Woman on Fire After Fatal Stabbing at St. Paul Warehouse
A Bloomington man has been charged with 2nd-degree murder after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend multiple times and lighting her on fire at a Saint Paul shipping warehouse, then fleeing the scene and starting his own house ablaze. Patrick Morris Simmons, 47, was formally charged Wednesday, with the court documents giving more insight into the circumstances of the woman’s grisly death.
Minneapolis Man Charged for Ramming St. Louis Park Squads During Pursuit
A Minneapolis man has been charged for striking numerous police squad cars while driving a stolen vehicle in St. Louis Park on Sunday, March 13. Andres Castillo, 26, was charged with 2nd-degree assault, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, fleeing a peace officer and receiving stolen property.
Man Arrested After Woman Found Fatally Burned at Saint Paul Shipping Warehouse
A woman found badly burned and unresponsive at a shipping warehouse Tuesday morning in Saint Paul has died of her injuries and a man has been arrested in relation, police say. Police were called to the 1700 block of Wynne Ave. just before 9 a.m. for a report of “a woman on fire.” When officers arrived, they located a woman in her 40s who was unresponsive, not breathing and appeared to have been badly burned, SPPD said in a media release.
No Charges After Fatal Shooting of Suspect in S. Minneapolis Home Invasion
Charges will not be filed against a homeowner after the suspect in a burglary and attempted home invasion was fatally shot in south Minneapolis last month. The shooting happened on the 3300 block of 25th Ave. S. late Feb. 22. Martin Lee Johnson, 30, of Minneapolis, was found shot in the chest in the back yard of the residence and died of his injuries at the scene.
Wisconsin Homicide Suspect Arrested in Anoka County
A suspect in a Wisconsin homicide last week has been arrested in Anoka County, authorities have confirmed. An arrest warrant was issued Sunday in Polk County, Wisc. for Joseph Patrick Hadro, 44, following a homicide in the village of Osceola on Wednesday, March 9.
Mahnomen Co. Deputy Shoots, Injures Female Suspect After Pursuit
A Mahnomen County sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a female suspect driver after a pursuit ended early Sunday in Naytahwaush, a small town about 20 miles east of Mahnomen. The sheriff’s office said in a brief media release that around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, March 13, the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on the driver.
Teen Arrested After 19-year-old Woman Fatally Stabbed in Duluth
Duluth police say a 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with 2nd-degree homicide after his 19-year-old family member was found fatally stabbed Friday night. Just after 6:40 p.m. Friday, March 11, police were called to the 1700 block of E. Superior St. for a report of an adult male family member who had been assaulted.
RCSO Deputy's Use of Force Ruled Justified in Mounds View Suspect's Death
The Dakota County Attorney’s Office announced this week that a Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy was justified in his use of deadly force when he struck a suspect on foot who had fired gunshots toward officers in Mounds View last fall. The suspect who later died of his injuries—Troy Engstrom, 48—could be seen on squad camera video Sept. 22, 2021, firing a gun at an officer’s vehicle. It struck the vehicle once but the officer was not injured.
Suspect Arrested in Shakopee After Man Shot Dead in Saint Paul
Police arrested a homicide suspect in Shakopee on Sunday after a man was found shot and killed in the back yard of a Saint Paul residence two days before. Delaquay Levius Williams, 27, was arrested in Shakopee on Mar. 6 and booked on suspicion of murder, believed to be connected to the shooting on the 600 block of Blair Ave. on Friday morning.
South Minneapolis Shooting Leaves Man Dead, 3 Hurt
A man was shot and killed early Sunday morning after an argument led to gunfire at a residence on the 2700 block of Blaisdell Ave. S., Minneapolis police have confirmed. Three other people were hurt when the shots rang out shortly before 2:25 a.m. Officers arrived to find bullet damage to the outside of the residence and a large crowd still inside.
Dakota County Sheriff Not Seeking Re-election
Dakota County Sheriff Tim Leslie will not seek another term in the post, he announced Friday afternoon. Leslie says he plans to work part-time and spend time with grandkids, traveling, golfing and volunteering. He’s held the position since 2015. Leslie writes in the release that he encourages Chief Deputy Joe Leko to run for sheriff in the election this year. Leko is a 24-year department veteran.
Woman Charged After 4 Held Hostage in Saint Paul Gas Station
A woman accused of holding four people hostage at gunpoint inside an east Saint Paul gas station earlier this week has now been charged with four counts of kidnapping. Kanisha Deon Wiggins, 31, of Saint Paul, was arrested after a SWAT team breached the door of the Speedway station at 846 Johnson Pkwy. on Tuesday, March 1.
MN Troopers Stop 500+ Speeders During 10-day 'HEAT' Patrol
Minnesota State Troopers stopped 516 drivers for speeding during a 10-day period of what the agency called Highway Enforcement for Aggressive Traffic—or ‘HEAT’—patrols. Troopers also arrested 23 people for driving while impaired and six people for outstanding warrants.
Brooklyn Park Man Gets 16 Years for Washington Co. Sex Trafficking
A Brooklyn Park man charged with promoting prostitution has been sentenced in Washington County District County to more than 16 years in prison. James Edward Williams, 42, was sentenced Friday to 201 months in state prison on charges of engaging in sex trafficking and violation of a no-contact order.
White Bear Lake Woman Pleads Guilty in Relation to Man's 2021 Dakota Co. Killing
Under a plea agreement, a 23-year-old White Bear Lake woman will avoid a 2nd-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a man found tied and gagged with a rag in a bathroom in southern Dakota County last July. Ryann Elizabeth Smith, 23, was originally charged with 2nd-degree unintentional murder in the death of Chris Laftontaine, 55, at his home on July 2, 2021 in Greenvale Township, in southern Dakota County.
Champlin Man Arrested at MSP Airport After Domestic Assault in Kandiyohi Co.
A Champlin man was arrested Monday night at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport after a reported domestic assault and gunshot fired in the city of Spicer that occurred early Sunday morning. According to a media release from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office, on Sunday, Feb. 27 at about 4 a.m., they received a report of an assault with a firearm in the area of 100 Lake Ave. N. in Spicer, northeast of Willmar.
